Click here for directions to the gallery. PRESS RELEASE 13 Tulane present SKYLARKING, an exhibition of collaborative works by David Staniunas and Adam Hinterlang. This year's suite of marker drawings is joined by a 5-hour rendition of the dub-reggae standard, "Skylarking," performed by Adam and David. In the Spring of 20...09, as David and Adam were preparing drawings for Workers Holiday at Kenyon College, a lull came over the frenzy of activity. Frenzy was restored by a divinely-inspired outburst of dub-reggae. Beyond its being a motivating force on the body, a revolutionary call to action, or a sacred message of vengeance, this music provided Adam and David with additional matter to draw. "Songs like 'Vampire,' where the rasta man never really makes clear whether he's hunting bankers or literal undead blood-suckers, kind of clarified our other drawings, for instance, providing a link between earlier images of zombies and monocled malefactors of great wealth," said Adam. "'Skylarking,' I think appeals to us on a number of levels. First, it's a song enunciating the moral order, like so many other songs about Rastafarian doctrine: it's literally an anti-panhandling polemic, but beyond that it's a call to youth to rise up. This is the second point: though the music is part of an old-head canon, its appeal is always to youth -- as we increasingly wish ours were. "Third, the music is about indigence, and how to overcome it, and contains a queasy ambivalence between Hey Bum Get a Job, and Hey Bum Seize the Means of Production, which I think aptly describes the public ethics of the Great Recession. Fourth, the song is three chords," said David. The performance will begin shortly after 4PM, and continue, with brief intermissions, until 9PM. Drawings will be on view for one night only. STATEMENT 1) Markers are transparent § Blessed is the ego for like an army marches into battle, so does the ego march after itself and will its own unmaking. Cross that shit out! § The men who occupy the great halls of finance and government would have us believe that Capitalism™ is like a wolf whose greatest joy is the act of felling it’s quarry. Really, it is like a domestic dog who, left untrained, will sully your home with its excrement, bite the hand of your guest and eat all manner of food and non-food until finally your home is no more and there is no bed on which to sleep. Only filthy scraps are left over. § A line is only a line so long as we can agree that it is a Line. So it is with all things. Such is the case with ganja, in its myriad uses, both religious and recreational, and its forms, both mythical and empirical. So it is that a single thing can be many things and then nothing at all. I do not smoke ganja but I know why the Rasta Man does. § A markers level of transparency is entirely dependent on the level of said transparency made available to the viewer. So it is that I and I change the mood. |
